Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

What is OSHC?

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is a compulsory health insurance policy required for international students studying in Australia. It ensures coverage for essential medical and hospital services, such as doctor consultations, ambulance services, and limited prescription medications. OSHC is mandatory for student visa holders (subclass 500) and their dependents, offering access to necessary healthcare during their stay.

Why Do You Need OSHC?

Australia’s public healthcare system, Medicare, is limited to citizens and permanent residents. As an international student, OSHC acts as your primary health insurance, providing coverage for essential medical needs, including:

  • General practitioner (GP) consultations and specialist visits

  • In-hospital treatment

  • Emergency ambulance services

  • Limited prescription medications

How to Get OSHC?

You must purchase OSHC before arriving in Australia, and it must remain valid throughout your student visa period. Many education providers collaborate with OSHC insurers to assist students in obtaining coverage. Alternatively, you can purchase OSHC directly from providers such as:

  • Bupa

  • Medibank

  • Allianz Global Assistance

  • nib

  • ahm

Each provider offers different coverage options, so compare policies to find the one that best suits your needs.

What Does OSHC Cover?

OSHC provides coverage for various healthcare services, including:

  • Doctor Visits: Consultation fees for general practitioners or specialists, with partial or full coverage depending on your policy.

  • Hospital Treatment: Costs associated with hospitalization are covered, either partially or fully.

  • Ambulance Services: Emergency transportation by ambulance is included.

  • Prescription Medications: Limited coverage for prescription costs, subject to caps on individual items and annual totals.

Note: OSHC generally does not cover dental, optical, or physiotherapy services. You may consider additional "extras" coverage if these services are necessary.

How Much Does OSHC Cost?

The cost of OSHC varies based on the provider, the duration of your stay, and whether you need single, couple, or family coverage. Typically, single student coverage costs between AU$450 and AU$600 per year. Family policies are more expensive, but options are available to suit varying needs.

Maintaining Your OSHC

To meet student visa requirements, you must maintain OSHC coverage for the entire duration of your stay. Ensure timely renewal of your policy and verify that it aligns with your visa dates. Lapses in coverage can affect your visa status.

How to Make a Claim

If you need medical care, you can file a claim with your OSHC provider for reimbursement. Most providers offer online portals or mobile apps for claims submission. Keep all receipts and necessary documentation for a smooth process.

FAQs about OSHC

1. Can I switch OSHC providers?

Yes, you can switch providers, but your new policy must maintain continuous coverage, ensuring no gap between policies.

2. Does OSHC cover pre-existing conditions?

Some OSHC policies exclude coverage for pre-existing conditions during the first 12 months. Check with your provider for specifics.

3. What happens if I extend my visa?

If your visa is extended, you must extend your OSHC to match the new visa period. Contact your provider to update your policy.
